WE CAUGHT UP WITH MIETZE CONTE TO TALK ABOUT INTUITION, EXPERIMENTATION, AND THE FREEDOM OF NOT KNOWING WHERE A SONG IS GOING NEXT. FROM THEIR LATEST PROJECT wufwufwuf TO SURREAL VISUALS AND HIGH-ENERGY LIVE SHOWS, THEIR PROCESS IS ROOTED IN SPONTANEITY: FAST DECISIONS, CONSTANT REINVENTION, AND TRUSTING INSTINCT OVER STRUCTURE.

IN THIS CONVERSATION, THEY REFLECT ON MAKING MUSIC WITHOUT RULES, CONNECTING WITH AUDIENCES ACROSS THE WORLD, AND WHY THE MOST EXCITING IDEAS ARE OFTEN THE ONES YOU DON’T FULLY UNDERSTAND YOURSELF.

ANOMIE: Hi! Your new project wufwufwuf feels like it pushes your sound into even more chaotic and playful territory. What was the starting point for this record? Was there a specific mood, idea, or moment that sparked it?

MIETZE CONTE: I feel like the starting point for all my music is an intuition, pretty much all my ideas for songs happen spontaneously and in the moment. I love surprising myself while making music , making decisions as quickly as possible , deleting and reducing a lot of sounds in the process , at the end I love when I don't even understand how I just made this song

ANOMIE: The track “numbers” has this dreamy, floating feeling while still being really bouncy. What inspired that one?

MIETZE CONTE: Numbers is a real love song for me , it's about being enchanted and floating when looking into someone’s eyes. I bought this shirt recently that says “somebody in London loves me” that sums it up pretty well haha

ANOMIE: “make it” is very catchy too, one of those tracks that gets stuck in your head immediately. Do you think about hooks deliberately when you’re producing, or do they just happen while you’re experimenting?

MIETZE CONTE: They really just happen, I just listen to my gut and change everything without hesitation till it feels good to me! I don't really get attached to sounds or ideas I really love creating in a continuous flow. At some point I feel like this intuition stops and I feel like I arrived somewhere, that’s when I know the song is finished

ANOMIE: The video for “are you real?” is beautiful and a bit surreal. Can you tell us about the concept behind it and how it came together?

MIETZE CONTE: The video is made by the visionary artist illuminati. I have been an admirer of her work and it was so special for me getting to work on this together with her. This video really turned out in such a unique way and for me it really captures the dream-like quality of the song so well.

ANOMIE: What’s your pre-show ritual before going on stage?

MIETZE CONTE: Honestly it's always different haha. Sometimes I'm just chilling backstage, sometimes I'm already hanging out checking out the support acts , chatting with the audience . Grab a bite of food . Playing shows is all about having fun , making a memorable experience for me so what happens before the show really depends on what’s going on that day !

ANOMIE: You’ve just wrapped the wufwufwuf UK and EU tour. Congratulations! How did the new songs feel live?

MIETZE CONTE: SO GOOD! I was so happy to finally get to play these songs live and I was stunned how well people reacted to them and that everybody knew the new songs already!!!

ANOMIE: You’ve played shows all over the world now, from Tokyo to Australia to Europe. Do crowds react differently depending on where you are?

MIETZE CONTE: There are some differences for sure but honestly travelling all over the world it just really shows me how connect we all are , the planet is so big but so small somehow , it really feels like we are sharing one big home together and we are all roommates No matter where I am , I am so grateful to always have the most fun kind and creative audience, it truly is the biggest gift.

ANOMIE: Dance music can sometimes become formulaic, but your work feels deliberately strange and unpredictable. Is that something you consciously protect in your music?

MIETZE CONTE: Yes for sure!! Because the most important thing for me is enjoying the process and it seems like I enjoy improvisation and surprise and experimentation the most , I love coming up with things that feel new and surprising. This is really what drives me creatively.

ANOMIE: Your music sits somewhere between eurodance, hyperpop, club music, and something completely its own. Do genre labels mean anything to you when you’re making music?

MIETZE CONTE: Honestly not at all., i'm not thinking about any of these things when creating. I’ve listened to so much amazing music in my live I have so much different inspirations my music is a combination of all of that and more , I totally understand that labels are helpful to try to make sense of the world but for me I don't connect I label with what I make or who I am

ANOMIE: You're about to head to the US and Canada for the next leg of the tour. What are you most excited about bringing to those shows?

MIETZE CONTE: I wrote this song where the main hook is “fuck ice fuck trump” I honestly can't wait to play that on the tour. I am so excited to bring my music to the USA and Canada , especially because playing shows what I almost love the most is getting to know so many different people and connecting all over the world. Getting to do this now in North America and spreading a positive message at the same time feels super exciting to me.

ANOMIE: Finally, what’s next in the world of Mietze Conte? Do you feel like wufwufwuf is opening the door to a new phase?

MIETZE CONTE: I am so into this mixtape still not sure where I am going to go next sound wise honestly, but yes I feel like every project I put out somehow widens my horizon and I feel like I can make whatever I want to make and I am pretty excited about that! Thank you for the interview <3
